N.D. (NewsDakota.com) Tax Commissioner Cory Fong said that the North Dakota Tax Department will waive penalties and interest for North Dakota taxpayers who are impacted by the winter storm and who end up missing Monday’s filing deadline.
Fong added, “The state Tax Department will waive penalties and interest for those taxpayers impacted by the storm, based on good cause. Taxpayers are encouraged to file their returns and pay tax due within a reasonable time. If taxpayers who were impacted by the storm find themselves with state penalties and interest in the months ahead due to filing their income tax return late, they should contact with the Tax Department immediately and we will work with them to resolve the issues.”
Individuals may request an extension by filing the federal IRS Form 4868 – Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File. Filing the IRS Form 4868 gives taxpayers until October 15, 2013 to file their individual income tax return. Taxpayers who are filing for an extension are required to include a payment of the anticipated taxes due. The IRS web site also has an option for taxpayers to E-pay who need to make a payment with their extension request. Taxpayers may contact the IRS at 800.829.1040.
