CITY (NewsDakota.com) – The Valley City State University football team will open the 2013 season against rival Jamestown College

The Vikings officially released the 2013 schedule on Monday, and it includes five home games at Shelly Ellig Field.

The Vikings open on the road against Jamestown College on Aug. 31. They’ll follow that up with a trip to NAIA national runner-up Morningside College on Sept. 7. The home opener for VCSU is Sept. 14 against Dakota State with a 6 p.m. kickoff.

“It took a little longer to fill our schedule as an independent this year but we are very excited about this year’s schedule,” head coach Dennis McCulloch said in a press release. “Playing five games at Shelly Ellig field, including three of our last four, is going to be fun.  The schedule will be a challenging one that includes rivalry games, an NAIA powerhouse and a trip to California. Our players look forward to it.”

VCSU’s homecoming opponent is Presentation College on Oct. 5. The Vikings also have a stretch of three straight home games when they host Gustavus Adolphus on Oct. 19, Jamestown College on Oct. 26, and Mayville State on Nov. 9.

The Vikings wrap up the regular season with a trip to Menlo College in Redwood City, Calif., on Nov. 16.
