N.D. (NewsDakota.com) The World Farmers’ Organization is hosting a General Assembly in Nigata, Japan, on April 15-18.

North Dakota Farmers Union President Woody Barth will join a delegation of Farmers Union leaders including National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson and Robert Carlson, President of World Farmers Organization.

Barth said, “I will be representing North Dakota to hear the latest on trade, food security and climate change. Education is a vital part of our organization and should be an integral part of the world-wide assembly.”

Barth said, “North Dakota can provide a great deal of expertise and can serve as a role model to other countries on how to promote family farming and ranching. Our state recognizes that agriculture is our number one industry and will continue to be part of the breadbasket to the world.”

The objective of the general assembly is to provide an opportunity to discuss WFO’s statutory issues, as well as offer the opportunity for farm organizations to collaborate in agriculture-related areas, such as food security, research, education and awareness-raising programs.

WFO brings together national agricultural producer organizations and farmer-owned cooperative organizations to create policies and advocate on world farmers’ behalf, in order to improve the economic situation and livelihood of producers, their families and their rural communities.

WFO works with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the International Fund for Agricultural Development, the World Economic Forum, the World Trade Organization, and the World Food Program, in addition to many United Nations organizations.

The delegation group includes NFU Secretary and Minnesota Farmers Union President Doug Peterson, Montana Farmers Union President Alan Merrill, Wisconsin Farmers Union President Darin Von Ruden and NFU General Counsel Dave Velde.
