CITY (NewsDakota.com) – Valley City State’s baseball team could not break through against Mayville State, losing three more games to the Comets this past weekend in Lennox, S.D.
Two of the losses came in extra innings as the Vikings dropped a 10-9 contest in 11 innings and a 3-1 contest in 10 innings. VCSU also lost 7-0 in the first game of the weekend.
In the 10-9 loss, the Viking offense racked up 15 hits, including three each from Colin Waldner and Scott Stephenson. VCSU trailed 8-1 after Mayville put up eight runs in the bottom of the second inning, but chipped away and scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to force extra innings.
Both teams went scoreless in the 10th, but the Vikings broke through with one run in the top of the 11th. The Comets were able to rally for two runs off Preston Jenson in the bottom of the 11th for the walk-off victory. VCSU committed five errors in the game, and only four of Mayville’s 10 runs were earned runs against Viking pitchers.
In the 3-1 game, Ronnie Blagg gave the Vikings eight solid innings on the mound, but the teams went to extra innings tied at 1-1 before Mayville State won it with two runs in the top of the 10th.
VCSU is now 10-17 on the year. The Vikings have lost their last five games, all coming in a four day stretch against Mayville State. The Comets continue their great start to their season and are now 24-2-1 overall.
