CITY (NewsDakota.com) – The Valley City High School track and field team continued the indoor portion of its season Monday at the Lisbon Indoor Meet in Wahpeton.
The Hi-Liners took a partial squad to the meet, and came away with a handful of Top 8 finishers.
“Our athletes performed well at the meet and several athletes set personal bests as well,” said head coach Trevor Bakalar. “Showing improvement and setting personal goals is a big part of track and field because even though you are competing against other individuals, it is really about trying to achieve your personal best time or distance.”
For the Hi-Liner girls, sophomore April Berntson took home first place in the 2-mile run and second place in the high jump. She also was part of the 2-mile relay that took second place and included Berntson, Camille Kawasaki, Barbara Zubrod and Jessica Ronning.
Annie Hart, a sophomore, added another second place finish for Valley City in pole vault. Junior Jess Gylden took fifth in her first attempt at long jump and junior Brenna Winter took sixth in the 55-meter hurdles.
Barbara Zubrod picked up seventh place in the 800-meter run and the 4×1 lap relay team of Ashley Durheim, Brienne Roehrich, Kayla Engelhard and Brenna Winter sprinted to a sixth-place finish.
The Hi-Liner boys were led by senior Shane Undem, who took fourth place in the 200-meter dash and was part of the 4×1 lap relay team that came in sixth.
A pair of pole vaulters finished in the Top 8: sophomore Clay LaRocque took fifth and freshman Lucas Jury came away with seventh in the pole vault.
Dustin Lindgren, a junior, set a personal best in shot put and took eighth place, and freshman thrower Noah Kvilvang showed off his speed with a sixth-place finish in the 55-meter shot put dash.
Undem, Lindgren, Jury and Jack Jenson teamed up for sixth place in the 4×160 yard relay.
