CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) A house bill sponsored by Valley City Representative Dwight Kiefert that would allow guns to be carried in schools, churches and other public places by a trained person to protect the public is getting mixed reviews.

Speaking during a legislative forum on Saturday Kiefert says it’s may be only part of the solution to protect the public from a mass shooting from happening in the future.

But this woman believes we should focus on identifying and supporting mental health needs of those who are troubled in school.

The issue was discussed at length during a legislative forum Saturday at Valley City State University. Enderlin Representative Naomi Muscha and Valley City Senator Larry Robinson also fielded questions from the audience on Saturday.

Meanwhile, some pastors in northwestern North Dakota are asking that guns be allowed in churches.

The Reverend Will Page, associate professor of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Williston says he’s worried that people with evil intentions may target churches because they know members of the congregation are not armed.

A church group plans to submit a petition this week to the city of Williston that would give churches the option of allowing concealed weapons.
