
ORLANDO, FLA. (VCSUVikings.com) – The Valley City State University baseball team concluded their Florida trip with a big win 13-12 win over the University of Fort Lauderdale on Saturday March 15.
The Vikings improve their record to 13-12 overall and finish the RussMatt Invitational 8-7. The University of Fort Lauderdale falls to 21-9 on the season and 2-1 in the RussMatt Invitational.

The Vikings complete a bottom of the ninth two-run comeback to win on a walk off sacrifice fly by Brady Papineau bringing in the game winning run. Viking Alexis Velasco was 4-for-6 on the day with two RBIs, and two runs from a double and three singles. Porter Jorgenson was 3-for-2 on the day with two RBIs, two runs, and three walks.
The Vikings exploded in the bottom of the first tallying seven runs to get off to a 7-0 lead. Porter Jorgenson started the scoring with a single to left that brought in Jaden Babiuk and Kaden Rozdeba. Later Daegen Morcom singled to center field that brought in two more Viking runs making it 4-0. Brady Papineau later scored on a passed ball. Diesel Goya singled to center field for one RBI bringing in Morcom. Babiuk once again at bat singled scoring Goya to make the score 7-0.
Fort Lauderdale answered in the top of the second scoring three from a bases loaded walk, scoring one on a sacrifice fly, and one more of a single to left. They later scored two more in the top of the third from a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch.
The Vikings once again found their rhythm scoring one of their own in the bottom of the third as Goya grounded out scoring Jorgenson. Later in the bottom of the fourth they scored one more from an Anthony Madsen single making it 9-5.
UFL once again scored on a bases loaded walk bringing the score to 9-6. In the top the sixth Fort Lauderdale rallied scoring five claiming an 11-9 lead from five hits and a walk.
The Vikings edged closer in the bottom of the seventh making the score 11-10 after a Jamel Chabot sacrifice fly. UFL scored one more in the top of the eighth making the score 12-10 after a triple.
The Vikings were quick to get on base with no outs in the bottom of the ninth having two runners in scoring position. Alexis Velasco doubled on a two RBI line drive to left that brought in the game tying run, making it 12-12. Velasco advanced to third on a passed ball. Then Brady Papineau hit a sacrifice fly right field bringing home the game winning run.
Viking pitcher Caleb Hoiseth was credited the win on a one inning two strikeout performance. The Vikings had Grady Shipman, Anthony Carrasquillo, Harrison Metz, Garrett Dykstra, and Eli Chabot make appearances on the mound.
UFL’s Jacob LaRoque was credited the loss. UFL had eight different pitchers in the contest.
