VALLEY CITY, ND (NewsDakota.com)  Sweeps proved elusive for Viking basketball this season, but VCSU earned one when it counted.

While the Viking women played a roller coaster on the road, the men came back at home.   VCSU topped Bellevie 78-76 in women’s play at Bellevue, while the men knocked off the Bruins 67-64 at the W. E. Osmon Fieldhouse Wednesday night.

Entering the game the Vikings had at least one win over every conference opponent, included first place Dakota State, ranked sixth at the time, except Bellevue.

VCSU solved the riddle in the fourth meeting.

JayCee Richter followed up her 29 points at Mayville State last week with 19 more to lead the Vikings to the win at Bellevue, NE.

Freshman Abby Aslesen added 15, and Olivia Backus reached double figures with 10.

Bellevue did not go away quietly, demolishing an early Viking lead with a 24-8 run that flipped a Viking 22-13 into a 37-30 lead of their own.   After the Vikings rallied and regained a 71-61 lead, the Bruins stormed back, but fell short.

Gabby Moore led the Bruins, and all scorers, with 23.

Viking leading scorer Lamar Grayson missed the final two games of the regular season, and played little in the first half Wednesday.

In a second half full of big moments, Grayson had one left.

Playing with a leg injury, Grayson drove to the basket for a monumental and-one on hard contact, cutting a one-time Bellevue 12-poimt lead to one.   Two foul shots later, he delivered the Vikings their first lead deep in the second half en route to the win.

Tyrel Creger bouyed the Vikings in the first half, scoring 10 of his 18 at the break.   Jayden Patcha added 12 after scoring 17 at Bellevue a week and a half ago.  Each hit big three point shots to fuel the comeback.

Grayson scored 11, all in the second half.

The Viking women travel to Dakota State Saturday, while the men travel to Dickinson State
