KANSAS CITY, KAN. (VCSUVikings.com)– Valley City State Baseball drops a pair of games 3-2 and 6-1 to Graceland University on Saturday Feb. 8. The Vikings finish the neutral site weekend series 1-3.
Valley City falls to 3-3 on the season. Graceland University improves to 4-4 on their 2025 season.
Graceland University 3, VCSU 2 (8 innings)
Valley City State lost a close game requiring one extra inning after finishing regulation play tied at 2-2. Valley City’s Hunter Logan was 2-for-2 at the plate and was walked once. Alexis Velasco had one hit, one run, and one walk in the contest.
The Vikings earned the first run of the contest in the top of the second. With two outs Cody Wielgosh was walked. Hunter Logan singled to right field. With two runners on base, Jaden Babiuk hit a single to the shortstop scoring Wielgosh. The Yellowjackets earned the last out and got out of the inning down 1-0.
Later in the bottom of the third, Graceland responded with a run of their own, tying the game 1-1. In the bottom of the fourth, the Yellowjackets earned their second run taking a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth Viking Alexis Velasco hit a line drive home run to left field tying the game. The sixth and seventh innings went scoreless leading the game into extra innings. The Vikings failed to score in the top of the eight and gave up a double and a single in the bottom of the eighth giving up the game winning run.
VCSU’s Takao Cookson pitched six innings, giving up eight hits and two runs. He earned five strikeouts. Anthony Carrasquillo pitched 1.2 innings giving up two hits and one run. He was credited with one strikeout and the loss.
Graceland University 6, VCSU 1 (7 innings)
VCSU fell in game two, 6-1. Vikings Alexis Velasco, Hunter Logan, and Christian Ramirez each tallied a hit.
The Vikings once again opened the scoring getting their first and only run on a wild pitch by Graceland University. The Yellowjackets quickly responded earning two runs in the bottom of the third.
In the bottom of the fourth the Yellowjackets expanded their lead with two more run making it 4-1 after a sacrifice fly to center field. In the bottom of the fifth they tacked on two more runs making it 6-1 where the game would end.
Valley City’s Johan Freudenburg pitched 2.2 innings, zero hits, two runs, three walks, four strike outs, and one error. Grady Shipman and Harrison Metz both pitched 1.2 innings a piece. Shipman gave up four runs, three hits, with two errors, a walk and two strikeouts.
