JAMESTOWN – Playing with confidence usually means playing better.
For two straight games, Jamestown Blue Jay Boys Basketball has appeared to play more confidently, and they have won.
Jamestown defeated St. Mary’s 73-55 on Tuesday at Jerry Meyer Arena for the Blue Jays’ first back-to-back victories in just over a year.
JHS’ girls took their third straight defeat, falling to St. Mary’s 65-56.
Boys: Jamestown 73, St. Mary’s 55
This time, Jamestown didn’t need the drama that marked their end of their upset win over Mandan last Thursday. The Blue Jays (2-13, 2-10 WDA) led for most of the game.
Thomas Newman continued his steady play, scoring 26 points and hitting 12-of-13 free throws. Newman has now hit 45 of his last 47 from the line. In his fifth varsity game, sophomore Edison Walters had his best so far, scoring 17 and knocking down three three-pointers. Braxton Perkins added 10.
Christian Benning led St. Mary’s (3-12, 2-10) with 27 points, but the Saints, who had defeated Jamestown in Bismarck last month, last their seventh straight game and eighth in their last nine.
Jamestown’s last previous back-to-back wins had been on January 30 and February 1 of last year. The 18-point winning margin was the largest for the Blue Jays since an 81-57 win over Bismarck in a West Region tournament state qualifying game on March 4, 2023.
Girls: Jamestown 65, St. Mary’s 56
Nine three-pointers helped St. Mary’s (9-6, 7-5 WDA) move into fourth place alone in the conference. Natalie Benning hit seven of those, including five in the second half, and poured in 23 points.
Adisyn Yunck scored 16 for Jamestown (5-10, 3-9), including 14 in the first half. Macey Neumiller added 11 and Leah Trumbauer scored seven. The Blue Jays lost for the third straight game.
Next for both Blue Jay teams will be Bismarck Legacy on the road on Friday. Coverage will begin at around 5:45 PM on The Voice of the Blue Jays, Jamestown 107.1.
