The Valley City girls never let Wahpeton gain momentum, jumping out to a 17-7 first-quarter lead behind Skye Nielson’s eight early points. Despite a strong second quarter from Wahpeton senior Scout Woods, who scored 10 in the frame, the Hi-Liners extended their lead to 35-19 at halftime.
Valley City put the game away in the third, erupting for 25 points. Maddie Anderson drained three three-pointers, while Nielson and Katie Burchill each added seven points. Four Hi-Liners finished in double figures, with Nielson leading all scorers with 19. With the game in hand, Valley City’s reserves closed out a dominant 63-39 win.
The boys’ game, however, was a different story. After a competitive first quarter, Wahpeton took control with a 39-25 halftime lead, powered by Brayden Steffens and Jack Gilbertson, who combined for 35 points. Valley City struggled offensively, relying heavily on Bryson Heck.
The Huskies’ defense stifled the Hi-Liners in the third, limiting them to just seven points while five different Wahpeton players contributed to a 17-point quarter. The Huskies’ balanced attack carried them through the fourth, sealing a 70-44 victory despite Heck’s game-high 24 points.
Valley City’s girls return to action on Thursday, Jan. 30, when they host Kindred at 7:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on 1490 AM/96.3 FM KOVC.
