MAPLETON, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) Two people were injured in a crash involving three semis and an SUV late Sunday night on Interstate 94, about two miles west of Mapleton.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports the crash occurred around 11:30 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of the interstate when icy conditions caused a chain reaction of collisions.

Authorities say a semi driven by Ahmed Abdi, 42, of Hopkins, Minnesota, lost control and jackknifed, with the truck landing in the median and its trailer blocking one lane of the highway. A second semi braked upon seeing the first truck, also jackknifing and leaving both trailers partially obstructing the driving lane.

Shortly after, an SUV driven by Williametta Barkar, 26, of West Fargo, collided with one of the trailers. Barkar exited her vehicle but was struck when a third semi, driven by 73-year-old Barry Nasea of Avonlea, Saskatchewan, jackknifed while attempting to brake and hit the SUV.

Barkar and Nasea sustained minor injuries and were transported to a hospital by ambulance. The other two semi drivers were uninjured.

The Highway Patrol cited Abdi for failing to exercise care required on icy roads.

Emergency responders from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, Casselton Fire, and Casselton Ambulance assisted at the scene.
