FARGO – Sheyenne’s power and passing were just too much for Jamestown.
For the third consecutive year, Sheyenne defeated Jamestown in the NDHSAA Class A Volleyball State Championship, winning in straight sets Thursday 25-20, 25-14, 25-17 at the Fargodome.
Solid serving and an aggressive attack helped Sheyenne (33-3) outscore Jamestown 53-27 and have 44 kills to the Blue Jays’ 23. Cora Metcalf had 11 kills, three blocks and four digs for the Mustangs. Alexa Killoran had 10 kills, an ace, a block and 17 digs. Makayla Admundson had 25 set assists and Marley Budeau scored 18. Baylor Dinger pulled off 27 digs.
Lucy Falk led the attack for Jamestown (21-18) with nine kills, a dig, and one-half block. Leah Trumbauer had seven kills and three digs. Edie Hegerle had 17 assists and 22 digs along with a kill.
Sheyenne took a 7-2 lead in the first set, but Jamestown rallied to 10-10, helped by an Aunika Moser ace and kills by Hegerle and Falk. Metcalf answered with five kills in a 6-0 run for Sheyenne. The Blue Jays were within five at 18-13 before Sheyenne scored six straight for set point. Jamestown then saved seven set points on kills by Trumbauer and Mari Anderson, followed by five Mustang attack errors before a JHS error ended the set.
Sheyenne started set two with a 9-2 run. Jamestown came no closer than 12-7 before two kills by Metcalf keyed a 7-3 run. Sheyenne then scored four of the last five to end the set.
Two blocks and a kill by Metcalf led Sheyenne to an 8-3 start in the third set. A Trumbauer kill brought Jamestown within 16-12 but five straight points gave the Mustangs a nine-point lead before the eight-point win.
