MINOT – A group of aces helped Jamestown Blue Jays Volleyball ace their chance to play for a state tournament berth.
Jamestown served 17 aces Friday in a four-set win over Minot North, 25-18, 25-13, 22-25, 25-16 in an elimination match of the Class A West Region Volleyball Tournament at the Magic City campus of Minot High School.
Edie Hegerle had six of those aces for Jamestown (20-17). Lucy Falk and Leah Trumbauer each had 14 kills. Trumbauer also had two aces. Hannah Erickson and Amelia Newman served three aces apiece. The Blue Jays also had six scoring blocks.
Trailing 10-9 in the first set, Jamestown had two runs of four points straight in a 10-2 flurry. Two of Hegerle’s aces came in that run, along with kills by Falk, Brooklyn Busch, Trumbauer and Haley Attleson. Three straight points for Minot North (14-23) cut the Blue Jay lead to 17-15, but an 8-3 run by Jamestown gave them the first set. Three blocks, including two solo by Mari Anderson, helped forge that rally.
Minot North led 10-9 in the second set, but Jamestown scored 13 of the next 14 points, including three more Hegerle aces, one by Newman and two kills by Falk. Hannah Erickson then served out the set with back-to-back aces.
The Sentinels’ best play came in the third set. McKinley Kragh had five kills in an 8-2 stretch that gave Minot North an 18-16 lead. Cadence Shipman had two late kills as Minot North stayed in the match.
Jamestown controlled the fourth set after leading 7-5. The Blue Jays then scored eight of the next 12 points as Hegerle, Trumbauer and Falk had two kills each. Anderson had two later kills and an Attleson kill closed the match out.
Shipman led Minot North with 14 kills. Kragh had 10.
