BISMARCK – Three-pointers kept coming from Jamestown and UMary couldn’t keep up.

Anthony Walters hit six three-pointers and scored 35 points on Thursday while Owen Hektner also nailed six threes and tallied 22 as University of Jamestown Men’s Basketball defeated future NSIC foe University of Mary 82-69 at McDowell Activity Center.

Walters, a junior transfer, matched his collegiate career high, set two years ago when he was the junior college Division III national scoring champion at Queensborough Community College in his native Queens, New York.  He hit six-of-seven three-pointers.

Hektner, a transfer from Minnesota State-Moorhead, hit six of nine threes and was eight-of-11 overall from the floor for the Jimmies (2-2).

Silas Bennion had 10 points.  Will Cordes had eight assists and seven rebounds.  Cole Glasgow pulled down eight rebounds.

Kevin McGaskey led UMary (1-5) with 16 points.  Xavier Lewis had 15.  Alex Mattes scored 11 and Cayden Redfield had 10.

Overall, Jamestown shot exactly 50 percent from the floor and made 15 of 26 threes for 58 percent.

After the Marauders scored the first basket of the game, Jamestown scored the next 10 points and never trailed again.  Twice in the first half, UJ led by 10 before taking a 40-32 lead into halftime.

A Bennion three-pointer with 13:04 remaining gave the Jimmies their longest lead at 58-43.  A Glasgow breakaway dunk with 11:22 left made the Jamestown lead 60-46.

UMary then put together a 15-4 run over the next 4:37, holding Jamestown to just one field goal during that stretch, and the Marauders were within 64-61.

But Walters then hit two layups and a three-pointer.  Hektner and Walters followed with layups and an 11-2 run had Jamestown up 75-63 with 3:07 left.  UMary came no closer than 10 points afterward.

This began a stretch of six straight games for the Jimmies against future NSIC opponents.  Jamestown will join that NCAA Division II conference in 2025-26.  Next for UJ will be the University of Sioux Falls on the road on Saturday.
