CITY (NewsDakota.com) – It was a split doubleheader Tuesday night as the Hi-Liner boys and girls hosted different teams at the Hi-Liner Activity Center. The results ended up being split as well, with the Hi-Liner boys winning and the girls losing.

The Hi-Liner boys basketball team won its first EDC game in two years Tuesday night, beating Devils Lake 74-58 and leading pretty much from start to finish.

Sophomore Jared Lentz scored 20 points for Valley City, including 10 in each half.

Lentz was one of four players who scored in double figures, joining Chase Carpenter, Mason Denholm and Tayler Lentz. Head coach Scott Hurlimann says they need to see more of that.

Carpenter scored 18, Tayler Lentz scored 13 and Denholm added 12. Valley City trailed 9-5, but ripped off 11 straight points to take the lead for good. Five straight points by Jared Lentz to close the first half put Valley City up 32-23. Midway through the second half they steadily extended to lead out to as many as 21 points before the 16-point final margin.

Nate Mertens led Devils Lake with 24 points. Chase Johnson added 12.

Valley City improves to 5-10 overall and 2-11 in the EDC. Devils Lake drops to 5-11 overall and 4-11 in the EDC.

The Hi-Liner girls hosted the No. 2 team in the state Tuesday night and dropped their third straight game, 67-46 against West Fargo.

The Packers used a 16-0 run in the first half to build a 12-point halftime lead. Valley City cut it to four early in the second half, but the Packers ripped off a 16-2 run to build a comfortable lead down the stretch.

Valley City was led by 15 points from Jessica Denholm. The Hi-Liners fall to 10-6 overall and 5-8 in the EDC. West Fargo improves to 13-2 overall and 12-2 in the EDC.

West Fargo was led by 17 points from Lexi Lennon, who has committed to play basketball for Valley City State next season.
