VALLEY CITY, ND (NewsDakota.com) Valley City State swept Minnesota-Morris in a womens and mens doubleheader Wednesday night.
WOMEN: VCSU 64, Morris 55
The Viking women reversed a first-half deficit with a slow and steady pull away through the third quarter, outscoring the Cougars 19-10 in the third quarter. The Vikings finished the game with 17 offensive rebounds.
Ellie Braaten finished with 16 points to lead the Vikings in scoring. Abby Aslesen had 12 points, and Madison Spacher scored a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, including five offensive rebounds.
The Vikings are now 4-1.
MEN: VCSU 72, Morris 66
The men used transition and great takes to the basket to build a 10-point edge, but turned the ball over nine times in the first half, surrendering an 11-0 Cougar run. The Cougars shot 8-17 from the three-point line in the opening half to lead by one at the break.
Valley City State responded by holding the Courgars scoreless for nearly seven minutes to start the second half, taking a 49-35, a 15-0 run to start the second stanza.
The Cougars refused to fade, with Leroy Staples-Fairbanks hitting three three-point shots in short order, pulling Morris back to within six. His fourth triple of the second half cut the edge to 70-64 with 1:25 left in the game. The Vikings would not see their lead challenged further.
Lamar Grayson led the Vikings with 16 points. Tyrel Creger added 15, and Caden Grinde knocked in 10.
The Viking men are now 4-0.
