CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) The U-S Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe recently announced that the U-S Postal Service will eliminate Saturday delivery to save money as revenues slides due to customer’s moving to other forms of electronic communication and delivery.

The U.S. agency loses $25 million a day, according to Donahoe. Last November the agency reported it lost $15.9 billion for the fiscal year that ended Sept. 20, more than triple its loss from the previous year.

Online banking and email has made the U.S. Post Office less relevant in today’s digital age. U.S. mail volume totaled 159.9 million pieces last year, a 5% decline from 2011.

Valley City Postmaster Sherry Johnson said P.O Box customers will see no change in their service on Saturday but city and rural deliveries will be eliminated under Donahoe’s plan starting August 5.

Johnson said the customer service window will be staffed on Saturday in Valley City even after the changes are implemented this August.

Johnson said rural residents have expressed regret and concern to her after the announcement was made February 6.
