JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – As National Teen Driver Safety Week approaches from Oct. 20-26, Vision Zero is urging parents and guardians to engage in critical conversations with their teen drivers about responsible driving habits.
Motor vehicle crashes remain the leading cause of injury-related deaths in North Dakota. In 2023, teen drivers accounted for 6% of all licensed drivers in the state but were involved in nearly 20% of all crashes and 6% of fatal crashes. Vision Zero’s focus is on reducing injuries and fatalities through family involvement in safety practices.
Inexperience, paired with risky behaviors such as speeding, driving under the influence, using cell phones, neglecting seat belts, and driving with multiple passengers, is a major contributor to teen-related crashes, injuries, and fatalities. Vision Zero Outreach Coordinators are working closely with schools and communities across North Dakota to raise awareness and educate families on the importance of responsible driving.
“Good driving behavior starts at home,” Vision Zero Outreach Coordinator Joey Carlblom said. “As a parent or guardian, your influence can make all the difference. Be the good example and show your teen what responsible driving looks like.”
A media release states that Vision Zero highlights the following safety reminders for parents and teens:
Buckle up every time, on every trip.
Avoid distractions, especially cell phones, which are illegal for teens to use while driving.
Follow the speed limit and drive according to road conditions.
Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Limit passengers, as the risk of crashes increases with more people in the vehicle.
Vision Zero continues its commitment to reducing teen driving fatalities by promoting safety and responsible behavior behind the wheel.
