BISMARCK, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Gov. Doug Burgum has declared the week of Oct. 6-12, 2024, as Fire Prevention Week across North Dakota, emphasizing the theme, “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!”

The observance highlights the critical role of smoke alarms in fire safety, urging residents to ensure their alarms are installed, tested, and maintained regularly. State Fire Marshal Doug Nelson emphasizes the importance of these devices, noting that a properly functioning smoke alarm can be a lifesaver when a fire breaks out. “This simple device can make all the difference when every second counts,” a media release states.

Officials are encouraging North Dakotans to test their smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button and listening for the alert. Batteries should be replaced annually or whenever the low battery warning chirps. Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years, or sooner if they malfunction. It’s also important to install smoke alarms in every bedroom, in hallways outside sleeping areas, and on every level of the home.

As part of Fire Prevention Week, residents are encouraged to review fire escape plans with family members, ensuring everyone recognizes the sound of the smoke alarm and knows what actions to take. Immediate response when an alarm sounds can be crucial in preventing tragedy.
