STERLING, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – A fatal crash involving two vehicles occurred Sunday night on I-94 westbound near mile marker 189, approximately seven miles east of Sterling. The accident was reported at 8:39 p.m. under high wind conditions.

According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, a 2004 Dodge Grand Caravan driven by a 41-year-old woman from Bismarck lost control while traveling eastbound. The vehicle crossed the median into the westbound lanes, where it struck a 1999 Kenworth semi-truck and trailer. The collision occurred at an angle, with the Dodge striking the middle of the semi’s trailer on the driver’s side before being run over by the rear trailer tires.

The driver of the Dodge, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her body was transported to a funeral home in Bismarck by Kidder County Ambulance. The driver of the semi, a 73-year-old man from Mora, Minnesota, was unharmed and had been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

No charges have been filed in the incident. The crash remains under investigation by the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

Several agencies responded to the scene, including the Burleigh County Sheriff’s Department, Steele Fire and Rescue, and Kidder County Ambulance. The westbound lanes of I-94 were closed for approximately two hours, with traffic diverted onto Old Highway 10 during the investigation and cleanup.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol continues to investigate the cause of the crash.
