VALLEY CITY, ND (NewsDakota.com) Despite a recent loss to Linton-HMB, the Medina-Pingree-Buchanan Thunder volleyball team is having a strong season, including a recent tournament championship.

The Thunder won the Valley City Optimist Tournament September 14th, part of a five-match winning streak that has them at 14-4 overall this season.

In tournament play in Valley City, MPB swept 2-0 wins over Ellendale and Four Winds, drew with Fargo Oak Grove 1-1, and advanced to the championship bracket.

In title play, the Thunder defeated perennial power Minot Our Redeemers 2-1, swept Wyndmere-Lidgerwood, and knocked off Valley City 2-1 in the final.

Following the tournament, MPB defeated South Border in a 3-0 sweep and earned a win over LaMoure-L-M 3-1.  Brynn Sorensen and Maddie Gefroh led the Thunder over South Border with 14 and 12 kills, respectively.  They both turned in double-doubles against the Loboes, with Gefroh recording 26 kills and 22 digs, and Sorensen knocking down 15 kills and digging up 34 balls.

Sorensen had 16 kills and 43 digs in a loss to Linton-HMB Saturday.  Gefroh recorded 11 kills and 21 digs.

Violet Bohl stands out as the teams setter this season.  She recorded 123 assists in the Optimist tournament, and had 18 assists in the win over South Border, 42 assists in the victory over LaMoure-L-M, and 35 assists in the loss to Linton-HMB.

The Thunder will travel to Wilton for a matchup with Wilton-Wing on Thursday.
