JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – A Southeast District Court judge on Wednesday rejected a plea deal for a Jamestown man charged with multiple felonies after his 2-year-old child overdosed on fentanyl, court records show.

Christopher William Johnson, 40, faces several charges related to the June 2 overdose, including child endangerment, a Class B felony; reckless endangerment; prohibited acts A/controlled substances; and possession of drug paraphernalia, both Class C felonies. He also faces a Class A misdemeanor charge for ingesting a controlled substance.

According to court documents, Johnson admitted to using fentanyl in his home while his child was present. Video surveillance obtained during the investigation allegedly shows both Johnson and Rhiannon Darlene Hufstetler, who also faces charges in the case, preparing fentanyl with the child nearby. Johnson reportedly ingested fentanyl, fell asleep, and woke to find the child unconscious. Syringes and other drug paraphernalia were found in various rooms of the residence, within reach of the 2-year-old and another 4-year-old child.

The overdose occurred on June 2, when Jamestown Police Department officers and Jamestown Area Ambulance responded to a call at a residence in the 1300 block of 4th Avenue Northeast. Officers administered NARCAN, with additional doses provided by ambulance personnel. The child was stabilized after being transported to Jamestown Regional Medical Center.

Johnson, who has prior drug convictions from 2014 and 2015, appeared before Judge James Shockman. His jury trial is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Oct. 1.

Hufstetler pleaded guilty Wednesday to reckless endangerment, a Class C felony, in connection to the incident. A charge of prohibited acts was dropped as part of her plea agreement. She was sentenced to five years in the North Dakota Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, with credit for 20 days served. Hufstetler is currently in custody at the Stutsman County Correctional Center.
