MAYVILLE – 2024 fall baseball for the University of Jamestown began Sunday with a doubleheader split against Mayville State at Scott Berry Field. The Jimmies took the opener 6-1 before the Comets won game two 7-5.
Game 1: Jamestown 6, Mayville State 1
Chase Burke drove in two runs for Jamestown and Avery Liestman pitched a complete game, allowing just a run and six hits with five strikeouts in seven innings.
Burke singled in Ben Swennumson for the Jimmies’ first run in the third inning.
The Comets scored a run in their third, but UJ took the lead back in the visiting fourth. Ryan Muizelaar hit a leadoff double, moved to third on a wild pitch, then scored on a groundout by Trever Goforth.
All the rest of the Jamestown runs came in the seventh on an RBI double by Burke, a two-run single by Alva, and an error committed as Alva was stealing third.
Burke, Alva and Muizelaar each had two hits.
Game 2: Mayville State 7, Jamestown 5
Mayville State led continually after scoring three runs in the first inning off UJ started Luke Zimmer.
The Jimmies scored twice in the second with a sacrifice fly by Keegan Neva and a sacrifice fly by Muizelaar.
A run in the home second and two more in the fifth for the Comets made their lead 6-2.
Jamestown rallied for three runs in the fifth on RBI singles by Ben Patton, Neva and Will Bachman.
Mayville State scored an insurance run in the sixth.
Burke and Patton had two hits each.
Jamestown will host Mayville State in a single game Wednesday at 3:00 PM at Jack Brown Stadium.
