Ethan Lawrence Igl, 19, Jamestown, ND passed away Tuesday, September 3, 2024 at his home with his family in Jamestown after an 8-month battle with cancer.
Ethan was born on December 28, 2004 in Jamestown, ND. He is the son of Larry and Amy (Tomaska) Igl and the brother of Alex Igl. He grew up in Jamestown, attending Saint John’s Academy for elementary school and graduating from Jamestown High School in May 2023. He attended Iowa State University in the fall of 2023, majoring in electrical engineering, before he was diagnosed with germ cell cancer.
Ethan enjoyed running, biking, and swimming. In high school, he was active in track, cross country, and swimming, and was the team captain for both cross country and swimming. Ethan loved playing the trombone and piano and was active in several bands in high school, including jazz band and marching band. He was selected as a drum major of the marching band in his junior year. He was a member of the National Honor Society and the Science Olympiad team.
Ethan was a lifelong Boy Scout. He started scouts in first grade and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout during his senior year of high school. At Iowa State University, Ethan was a member of the PrISUm Solar Car Club and competed in Super Smash Brothers tournaments. Ethan especially loved to play the Magic the Gathering card game with his friends.
Ethan was a smart, funny, fun-loving, kind, and compassionate young man who left this world
much too early. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He loved life to the fullest
and always had an infectious smile. He battled cancer valiantly for 8 months while always
having a positive attitude. Ethan will be greatly missed by everyone that knew him. He was the
kind of young man that anyone would be proud to call son, grandson, brother, and friend.
Ethan is survived by his parents, Amy and Larry (Jamestown, ND); brother, Alex (Las Cruces,
NM); grandmother, Wanda Tomaska (Carlinville, IL); Aunt Melissa and Uncle Doug Olivero
(Peru, IL); Uncle and godfather, John Tomaska (Ft. Wayne, IN); Uncle Ed and Aunt Ellen Igl (Fox
Lake, WI); Aunt Rosemarie Harris (Jasper, MN); Uncle Tony and Aunt Darlene Igl (Oconomowoc,
WI); Aunt Jackie and Uncle Dan Manning (Thiensville, WI); Aunt Geri and Uncle Steve Ferkel
(Appleton, WI); Aunt Carolyn and Uncle Paul Cripps (Houston, MN); Uncle Andy and Aunt Greta
Igl (Menomonee Falls, WI); Aunt Cindy and Uncle Patrick Decleene (Hartland, WI), Aunt and
godmother Cheryl and Uncle Mike Drover (Milwaukee, WI), and many cousins and friends.
Ethan was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Edward and Rose Igl; maternal
grandfather John Tomaska; great grandmother Emily Tomaska; Aunt Nancy Igl; Uncle Joel
Harris; cousin Benjamin Harris, and cousin Nicholas Wilcox.
Ethan’s family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Roger Marris Cancer Clinic in
Fargo, Sanford Children’s Hospital in Fargo, the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN and Jamestown
Regional Medical Center Emergency Department in Jamestown for the special care that was
given to him over the past 8 months. Thank you also, to the Ronald McDonald House in Fargo
and the Gift of Life Transplant House in Rochester for providing a home away from home during
Ethan’s treatments.
Visitation 1-7p Tuesday September 10, 2024 at the Haut funeral Home with family accepting
friends from 4-7p.
Mass of Christian Burial- 10:00 AM Wednesday, September 11, 2024 at the Basilica of St. James
in Jamestown with a meal to follow. Ethan will be interred at Calvary Cemetery after the meal.
