RICHLAND COUNTY, N.D. (KFGO) – A man wanted on multiple warrants in several counties was arrested after a high-speed pursuit through three counties. The chase started around 5pm June 12th near Felton, Minnesota in Clay County, continued into Cass County, and eventually ended in Richland County.
The Richland County Sheriff’s Office says the Toyota Rav became stuck in a field on the west side of Walcott, ND and the driver, 43-year-old Mark Compton, fled on foot. A woman who was a passenger was detained at the scene and eventually released. Shortly after the vehicle was abandoned, it started on fire, igniting a grass fire in the field. Fire departments from Colfax and Walcott were called to put out the fire.
Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the area, set up a perimeter. A shelter-in-place message was also sent out to Walcott residents and K-9 search teams from Clay County conducted a ground search and a drone was used in a search from the air. A house-by-house search was also conducted and Clay County deputies tracked down Compton hiding in a motorhome in the driveway of a Walcott residence shortly after 8 p.m.
Compton was arrested on three theft warrants from Grand Forks County, a burglary warrant from Cass County, and one for possessing stolen property in Richland County. He’s jailed in Richland County on the warrants and further charges are expected for the pursuit, property damage, and trespass to a motor vehicle. There were no injuries and the vehicle was totaled.
