JAMESTOWN- The Sheyenne-New Rockford Black Sox knew their Class B semifinal would be a “David vs Goliath” clash, but it took until the sixth inning for the two-time defending champion Thompson Tommies to pull away and advance to the Class B State Championship Game with a 6-0 win Friday at Jack Brown Stadium.
The Black Sox applied pressure early. Two walks in the first with two outs were stranded and in the third inning, they loaded the bases but came up empty. In the fourth, Thompson finally broke the deadlock as Brayden Tyce scored Jonathan Muhs with a single for a 1-0 lead.
After the Tommies scored again in the fifth to make it 2-0, they opened it up in the sixth with three extra-base hits in the inning to score four runs and stretch the lead to 6-0. Drew Odenbach tossed a three-hit shutout with four walks and eight strikeouts.
The Black Sox will face the Central Cass Squirrels in the 3rd place game on Saturday with coverage on KDAK beginning at 4:15 PM. The Squirrels fell to Grafton 6-2 in the other semifinal.
