ASHLEY- Carrington senior Grady Shipman dominated to the tune of fifteen strikeouts and the offense did just enough as the Cardinals (3-6, 2-2) beat the South Border Mustangs 4-1 in Ashley on Monday afternoon.
The early stages were an old-fashioned pitchers’ duel, as neither Shipman nor Mustang RHP Beckley Frantz allowed a hit into the fourth. After two were out in the bottom of the inning, Ethan Roller and Max Whittman connected on back-to-back solo homers to give Carrington a 2-0 lead. Jake Otto added a two-run single in the fifth for a 4-0 lead. Those were the only hits the Cardinals had all game.
But that was all they needed, as Shipman (1-1) allowed three hits and one run while walking four and striking out fifteen, including twice striking out the side, to pick up the win.
The Cardinals host New Rockford Sheyenne at Bank Forward Park Tuesday with coverage beginning at 2:45pm on KDAK The Cardinal. If the game is postponed, it will be played Wednesday with coverage on The Cardinal beginning at 1:45pm.
