ABERDEEN, S.D. (NSU) – The Northern State University (NSU) Theatre Program will present the play “Peter/Wendy” in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Black Box Theater. Free performances will be at 7:30 p.m. April 12 and at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. April 13.
In Jeremy Bloom’s adaptation of the classic Peter Pan story, Wendy begins thinking happy thoughts as she takes flight with Peter to visit Neverland. The story comes to life with creative storytelling highlighting iconic elements like Tinkerbell, the lost boys, a mermaid and Captain Hook. “Peter/Wendy” is intended for all ages with parental guidance.
Student director Anya Jones, a senior general studies major, was drawn to “Peter/Wendy” because of her passion for creating theatre for young audiences.
“Northern puts on many great shows every year, but most are not aimed at all audiences. ‘Peter/Wendy’ is for everyone, particularly children,” Jones said. “While working on this show, I’ve discovered a lot about myself. Theatre has always been an important part of my life, but after working on this show, I truly realize how much it means to me. After I graduate, I plan to stay active in local theaters, especially in shows for children.”
The cast includes established performers and students new to Northern’s stages.
Jones said, “I’ve loved working on this show. My favorite part is seeing my cast develop. Not only do I get to help them blossom into their characters, but I also get to watch as the cast grows closer.”
Haylee Bohnet, an accounting major from Volga who plays Tinkerbell, said, “The most fun part of the show is the interactions between cast members.”
She added, “The most challenging part is adding more depth to my character. I want to show that Tinkerbell is more than just a jealous fairy. People should come see ‘Peter/Wendy’ because it is a beautiful story told in a unique way.”
Assistant professor Kane Anderson serves as directing mentor.
“When our Season Selection Committee read the play last year, we saw this piece as an exciting opportunity to showcase how Northern celebrates theatre that meets our audiences with diverse styles,” he said. “‘Peter/Wendy’ showcases the amazing hard work and happy thoughts Anya Jones and her team bring to the stage.”
Northern Theatre’s artistic staff includes Anderson; Noah J. Files, assistant professor of theatre design; and Brian Omland, production manager for the School of Fine Arts.
Free general admission tickets will be available at the door. For more information, contact the Northern School of Fine Arts at 605-626-2497.
