jimmies-3

LEWISTON, ID – A double-digit seeding didn’t mean double trouble for University of Jamestown Women’s Basketball in a game where the program gained a new all-time leading scorer.

Jamestown, the 12th seed in the Naismith Quadrant, upset fifth seed The Master’s Friday 59-53 in the opening round of the NAIA Women’s Basketball Championship at the P1FCU Activity Center at Lewis-Clark State College.  Jamestown will meet the host of the “pod,” Lewis-Clark State, on Saturday for a spot in the Round of 16 next Thursday in Sioux City, Iowa.

Senior Audrey Rodakowski, matched up against the nation’s leading shot blocker, Madeline Cooke of the Master’s, was better, leading all scorers with 20 points and pulling down seven rebounds and blocking a shot.  Cooke, who had 100 blocks for the season, couldn’t record one in this game.

Senior Kia Tower became Jimmie Women’s Basketball’s all-time leading scorer by notching 17 points.  The record was broken on a layup that gave Jamestown (18-12) a 55-46 lead with 4:16 remaining, not long after the Mustangs had cut a 13-point Jamestown lead to three.  Tower now has 1,802 points, one more than Keri Bakker, who played at UJ from 1997-2000.

Samantha Paulsen again contributed well off the bench for Jamestown, scoring nine.  Kate Cordes was held to seven points, but hit two important shots in the fourth quarter to hold off a rally by The Master’s.

Rodakowski began the season 51st on the Jimmies’ all-time scoring list.  She’s now 21st with 1,046 points.

Lexi Hernandez led The Master’s (25-7) with 13 points.  Cooke did have a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.  Three-point specialist Isabela Hernandez didn’t hit a three and managed only five points.

Coverage of the second round game between Jamestown and Lewis-Clark will begin at 7:00 PM on Saturday night on The Voice of the Jimmies, Jamestown 107.1.
