The Hi-Liner’s defense propelled them to a 53-31 win over the Lisbon Broncos in their Region 1 Quarterfinal matchup on Monday, as the Hi-Liners were able to rest their starters for their game tomorrow.

Slow starts would be the day’s theme for Valley City, as the offense struggled with shooting and turnovers in the first three quarters. In the first, the defense prowess of Greta Goven would carry a struggling Hi-Liner offense, as her ability to turn steals into fast break points netted her a team-leading ten points at the end of the first quarter. While the offense struggled, the defense clamped down, only allowing six points in the opening frame as the Hi-Liners held a 15-6 lead going into the second quarter.

The second quarter would see both teams struggle offensively. However, a couple of well-timed three-pointers by Drew and Dacota Potratz helped pick up the slack for another rough shooting quarter for Valley City. Katie Burchill would also pick up the scoring effort, as she shook off a slow start to the game to finish with 12 points on the day. The Hi-Liners found themselves comfortably in front 31-13 when the halftime whistle sounded.

The third again would see the Hi-Liners and Lisbon struggle to score early, but a corner three by Greta Goven allowed the Hi-Liners to breathe a sigh of relief as they managed to stretch their lead to 45-19 going into the final quarter. The fourth would see Valley City empty their bench as Kailee Nielson led the way for the Valley City reserves, finishing with five points in the quarter.

The next game for Valley City will be at approximately 8:00 pm on KOVC tomorrow, as they’ll be taking on the Wahpeton Huskies.

Northern Cass 63-40 Central Cass

The Jaguars had little trouble dispatching their rivals as Haidyn Crockett once again finished with over half her team’s points as she continued to cement her First-Team All-State case to voters. The Jaguars will get their third crack at the top-seeded Kindred Vikings, with the winner moving on to the Region 1 Championship. These two sides split their two matchups this year, with the Jaguars snagging the first on the road 63-59 with Kindred cruising to a 72-41 win in Hunter.

Wahpeton 43-41 Oak Grove

The third quarterfinal matchup between the Huskies and Grovers was a battle of inches throughout the game, with the score tied at 24-24 at the half. Free throws and defense would be decisive factors in determining the game as both teams struggled to score from the field, which turned into a defensive grind for both teams in the second half. Oak Grove had a chance to tie the game with seven seconds to play, but a pair of inside shots sailed wide of the basket as the Huskies survived the sixth-seeded Grovers.
