(NewsDakota.com) – Patrick Strom and A.J. Jacobson have been the main concerns in stopping the Shanley boys’ basketball team so far this season. However, it was the Deacons’ supporting cast that gave Valley City the most fits on Tuesday night in Fargo. The state-ranked Deacons remained perfect in EDC play with a 84-58 win on Tuesday night.

Strom and Jacobson combine to average 51 points per game. Jacobson led four Deacons in double figures with 19 points. He was 11-12 from the free throw, and his only field goal of the first half came on a breakaway dunk. Strom, after scoring 41 points in a Friday win over Davies, was held to just five points Tuesday night. Connor Dunn and Dylan Alderman each chipped in 17 points. Dunn and Alderman came into Tuesday’s game averaging 9 and 8 points per game, respectively. Dunn drilled four three-pointers in the first half as the Deacons built a 47-25 halftime lead.

Shanley increased the lead to over 30 points in the 2nd half, before a late Hi-Liners run cut away at some of the lead. Chase Carpenter survived first-half foul trouble to lead Valley City with 21 points. Jared Lentz added 15 points, including four treys, and Tayler Lentz chipped in eleven.

With the win, Shanley moves to 6-1 overall, 6-0 in the EDC. The Deacons have a one-game lead over idle Red River. Valley City falls to 3-6 overall, 0-4 in the EDC. The Hi-Liners host Lisbon on Saturday afternoon, with a 3:00 tip-off. Pre-game at 2:45 on TED FM (98.3/102.7 FM). The Hi-Liners have an extended break from EDC play until February 1, when they travel to Grand Forks Central.
