James Eugene Miller was born October 8, 1937, in Mercy Hospital, Valley City, ND. He was the second son of Jennie (Rothenberger) and Dewey Miller. After living in Cuba, ND, the family moved to Valley City, where they would reside for the rest of their lives.

Jim attended Valley City Elementary and High School. After graduating, he went to the University of North Dakota, where he majored in management. He was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity. He met Patricia Gooden. After a lengthy courtship, they were married on September 20, 1959.

Jim worked with his father and helped manage grain elevators in eastern North Dakota. Jim and Pat had three sons, Jeffrey, Randy, and Steven. Later, they were known as the JRS. Jim was preceded in death by his wife, brother Jerry, and his parents.

Jim is survived by his sons, Jeff (Gail), Randy (Bobbie), and Steven (Rebecca); six grandchildren, Kari (Stephen Meyer) Joseph (Olivia), Dustin (Clarissa), Brandon (Emma Everett), Emily, and Amanda; four great-grandchildren, Ava, Jameson, River, and Jackson.
