New Rockford, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)—–The Carrington girls basketball team defeated New Rockford-Sheyenne (NRS) 41-39 to start the 2023-24 basketball season. The Cardinals and Rockets started the game in a 10-10 tie at the end of the first quarter. The Rockets would take a 10-4 second quarter advantage and lead 20-14 at the break. First game jitters accounted for 24 combined first half turnovers (12 for each team). Carrington appeared to take control of the game in the third quarter outscoring the Rockets 19-4 and taking a 33-24 lead into the final 8 minutes. NRS would fight back in the fourth quarter using full court pressure to create 10 more Cardinal turnovers (27 total) and outscored the Cards 15-8 but came up a bit short as Carrington held on foe a 41-39 win. The Cards were paced by Edyn Hoornaert with 12 points, Madison Johnson (10 points), and Kacie Rexin with 9 points. The Rockets were paced by Ava Peterson and Kelcie Belquist with game high 14 point performances. Peterson and Belquist scored 13 of the 15 Rockets fourth quarter points. NRS finished the night with 18 turnovers (only 6 in the second half). NRS starts the season 0-1 and will travel to Rugby on Thursday to compete in the CNDC tournament and the Cardinals will travel to Grafton on Friday night with radio coverage on AM 1600 KDAK (THE CARDINAL), FM 100.1, and www.newsdakota.com
