GRAND FORKS, ND  (NewsDakota.com)  The Vikings represented themselves admirably, but struggled with a sizer, more physical Fighting Hawks team from the University of North Dakota, dropping a 93-63 decision in mens basketball Thursday.

The Vikings kept the game within two possessions in the first eight minutes before a rebounding advantage and defensive pressure led to a 15-2 Fighting Hawks run, leading to a 44-23 advantage at halftime.

Valley City State scored 40 second-half points, cutting the lead to 18 before a three-point barrage by Treyson Eaglestaff helped push the lead to as many as 36.

Rebounding was a huge factor.  UND outrebounded the Vikings 46-22, including 16 offensive rebounds on the night.

Hunter Lyman led the Vikings with 15 points, matching up with UND’s physical play.  Jerome Washington added 10 for VCSU.

The Vikings face Viterbo in non-conference action Saturday.
