Oakes, ND (NewsDakota.com) – The District 5 Tournament wraps up in Oakes on Monday Oct 30th where a champion will be crowned and two teams eliminated from the postseason. Game 1 (Region Qualifier) – Oakes 3 – 0 Griggs-Midkota (25-15, 25-8, 25-23)
The Tornadoes punched their ticket to a 12th straight appearance to a Region Tournament in either Region 1 or 3. The game started with a back an forth affair all the way to 9-9 before Oakes went on a 12 point run to take a 21-9 lead. They’d trade points till they took the set 25-15. Set two was all Oakes as they jumped out to a 17-4 lead and traded points till they took the set 25-8. Set 3 was a tale of 2 halves Oakes dominated early building up a lead of 20-12 before the Titans battled it to within 1 at 22-21 however the Tornadoes would do just enough to win the set 25-23.
Griggs-Midkota’s season comes to an end with a (2-4, 6-20) record. The Tornadoes advance to the Region 3 Tournament as the #3 seed.
The Oakes Player of the Game was Ann Muggli. The Titans Player of the Game was Vanessa Vollmer
Game 2 (Region Qualifier) – Carrington 3-0 Ellendale (25-17, 25-23, 25-9)
The Carrington Cardinals punched their 17th straight Region Tournament appearance (Region 3 & 4) as they sweep the Ellendale Cardinals. Carrington and Ellendale battled back and forth early in set 1 as they were 1 point apart at 13-12 with Carrington on top. Carrington would then go on a 7-2 run to take a 20-14 lead and then take the set 25-17. Set 2 started as all Ellendale as they built a 19-11 lead late into the set however Carrington would go on a huge run to tie it back up at 23-23 and take the set on 25-23. Set 3 was Carrington dominance as they controlled all aspects of play to win the set 25-9.
Ellendales season comes to an end with a record of (1-5, 13-7). Carrington advances to the Region 3 Tournament as the #4 seed.
Carrington’s Player of the Game was Madison Johnson. Ellendale’s Player of the Game was Ariel Hagen.
Game 3 (District 5 Championship) – #9 Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier 3-2 LaMoure-LM (23-25, 16-25, 25-22, 25-17, 15-10)
The EKM Rebels won their first District 5 Chamiopnship for the first time since 2007 (As Edgeley-Kulm) beating the LaMoure-LM Loboes by a reverse sweep 3-2. The game started with the Loboes and Rebels battling back and forth all the way to 19-19 when LaMoure-LM would take the lead and win the set 25-23. The second set saw LLM take a big lead after 9-9 up to 18-12 before winning the set 25-16. Set 3 was a battle back and forth till 13-13 when LLM would build a 18-14 lead EKM would battle back and take the lead at 23-22 for good winning the set 25-22. Set 4 saw EKM dominate the pace of play taking a 7-2 lead and later a 20-11 lead. They’d take the set 25-17. Set 5 was back and forth till 5-5 when the Rebels would take the lead for good and build it to 11-6 winning the set 15-10.
EKM earns the top spot in District 5 and the District 5 Championship. LLM earns the #2 spot in the District.
The EKM player of the game was Mataeya Mathern. The Loboes Player of the Game was Heidi Steffes.
