The 12th-ranked University of Jamestown women’s volleyball team started with a win yesterday evening to begin the 4-game home stand to end the season. UJ was able to sweep the Morningside (Iowa) University Mustangs with set scores of 25-22, 25-22, and 25-15.

After falling behind 13-12 in the opening set, UJ recovered for four consecutive points, starting with a kill by Logan Sherman.  Morningside took a 21-18 lead thanks to a service error, but the Mustangs battled back to reach within 22-21. Aleah Zieske’s back-to-back kills placed the Jimmies at set point, and after Morningside fought off UJ’s initial attempt to take the set, Sherman sealed the deal.

In set two, the Mustangs took a 14-9 lead, but Jamestown rallied for four straight points to pull within a point. UJ’s worst deficit was three points, at 16-13, which they recovered when Sherman’s kill brought the score to 19-18. A 19-all deadlock was broken by a block from Sherman and Darienne Johnson, and it was 21-19 after another block from Johnson and Charlee Krieg. Kills by Johnson and Lexi Olson helped the Jimmies to a 25-22 victory in the set.

The Jimmies took a 13-6 lead in the third set, but Morningside scored six straight to cut the lead to 1. Following a service error by the Jimmies, the Mustangs drew as close as 16-15, but couldn’t muster up more offense the rest of the way. UJ would get the third set 25-15 winning 3-0.

Zieske finished with 13 kills and 11 digs. Sherman added eight kills with a team-high .389 hitting percentage. Lily Bertsch had a double-double of 20 assists and 10 digs. Paige Oswald also recorded a double-double of 18 assists and 10 digs. Ellie Holen had a match-high 18 digs. Johnson and Krieg each had four block assists.

UJ will host No. 5 Viterbo (Wis.) University Thursday in a non-conference match beginning at 7 p.m.
