The Jamestown Blue Jay volleyball team went on the road last night against a top conference foe the Bismarck Century Patriots and earned a 3-2 victory. Coming into this contest both teams have had their way in the WDA, Jamestown was 15-1 and Bismarck Century 14-2 prior to the matchup.

The match would get off to a hot start, Bismarck Century got the first significant lead of the first set getting out ahead 12-5 midway through. The Blue Jays would fight back in the set and the dramatics would start at the end of set 1. Addison Marker and Kindly Anderson would block a shot at the net tying the contest up at 25 a piece. Leah Trumbaeur would spike a shot and give the Blue Jays a 26-25 lead. The Patriots would respond tying it up at 26. Trumbauer would score again giving Jamestown a 27-26 lead. Bismarck Century would respond with 3 straight points to win the first set 29-27. The final score came from Madison Wolf from Bismarck Century.

In the second set, Jamestown would get out a 19-14 lead looking to bounce back strong. Century would come back to take the lead back 20-19. Makenna Nold would set up Trumbaeur for a swing that would give the Blue Jays a tie game 20-20. Both teams would battle back and forth before Jamestown would pull away with back-to-back points coming from Nold and Addison Marker to win the second set 26-24.

The third set would be all Jamestown, getting out to an early 8-1 lead and never giving the lead back up even though Bismarck Century cut the lead to 22-20 they would hold on and win the third set 25-21. Halfway through the fourth set, Bismarck Century responded to the Blue Jays’ win in the third set and got out to a 12-5 lead. Jamestown would cut the lead to just one 17-18 and again at 19-20. But the Patriots would hold on and win 25-20

The fifth and final set brought drama as well. Jamestown sprinted to an 8-2 lead, looking poised to run away with the win. The Patriots showed some fight down 11-6 climbing their way back to tie it up 11 all. Leah Trumbaeur would swing one in for a kill giving Jamestown the 12-11 lead. Kinley Anderson in the middle blocked a shot from Wolf and gave the Blue Jays a 13-11 lead. Wolf would softly float the ball over the net to get a point and have the Patriots trailing by just one point 13-12. Quin Kost would get a service ace to tie the fifth and final set 13-13.

Things got weird late, for the Blue Jays Edie Hagerle set up Kinley Anderson in the middle for a shot but the up judge called the shot out of bounds but at the same time the line judge called it tipped. The referees discussed the play and they decided no points to be awarded, it would be replayed. Atrianna Backman would score one from the back row giving the Patriots a 14-13 lead. On the next play, Sarah Sletto would set up Trumbaeur for the kill getting it and tying the action at 14 a piece. Trumbauer would score two service aces to end the game winning it for the Blue Jays 16-14. The Blue Jays won for the first time in 10 years at Bismarck Century and have sole ownership over the first seed in the WDA. Jamestown’s record improved to 25-5 and 16-1 in conference play this season. Bismarck Century falls to 23-5 and 14-3 in conference play.
Jamestown will be back in action for their last regular season match at home next Thursday 10/26 against Dickinson. That match is set for 7 p.m.
