(NewsDakota.com)- Jamestown took care of business tonight when they welcomed Devils Lake to Jerry Meyer Arena. The girls used a 30-4 sandwiching halftime to take control of their 69-58 win and the boys held off a 36-point outburst from Nate Mertens to win 73-70.
The girls of Jamestown High trailed 23-18 with just a few minutes left before the half, but they exploded on a 30-4 run to take a 48-27 lead.
Devils Lake was able to close the gap to 56-50, before the Jays put up nine straight. Erin Mullowney hit a three and Kyra Dewald converted a three-point play for three of her game-high 21 during the 9-0 run to spark Jamestown.
The Jays coasted after that run to win 69-58. Paige Peterson had 13 for the Jays, who improved to 5-1.
In the boys game, it was the Nate Mertens Show for Devils Lake, but that didn’t end in a Firebird win. Mertens scored 36 and had a chance to tie in the final minutes, but Jamestown held on to win 73-70.
Jamestown went up 70-62 in the final moments, but the Firebirds refused to go away. Mertens hit a three coupled with a lay-up and a Spencer Halvorson triple to close the gap to three on the final possession. Merten’s game-tying shot missed at the buzzer to preserve the Jays win.
The Jays improved to 2-4 with their second straight win. Both teams return to action Friday when Dickinson comes to town. Tip-off for the girls is scheduled for 5:45pm and will be on 1400 KQDJ.
