VALLEY CITY, ND  (NewsDakota.com, photo courtesy of VCSUVikings.com)  After a five match win streak that saw the Vikings hunting some of the top-ranked teams in the region, they found themselves as the hunted in Mayville Wednesday night.

Mayville State hit a blistering .275 for the match and outblocked the Vikings 15-9 in a 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 26-24) sweep of Valley City State at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse.

Viking volleyball had used the block as a major weapon during their run to a 19-4 record entering the night.  That block was non-existent until the third set, and was not enough at the end of the night.  Valley City State lost an early six-point lead in the third, falling in extra points after two sets of tightly contested volleyball that saw the Comet offense pick apart the Viking defensive effort.

Madison McKinnon led the Comets with 11 kills and four blocks, with Elora Passa adding 10 kills.

The Viking offense was solid, hitting .204 for the match.  Mardi Scutchings led the way with a match-high 14 kills.  Bailey Nelson added 10 kills, Danielle Hagler recorded eight, and Morgan Freije had six kills and four blocks in the loss.

The Vikings fell to 19-5, 6-2 in North Star Athletic Association play.  They face Morningside and Buena Vista University in tournament volleyball this Saturday in Sioux City, IA.
