Evelyn Jean Peter was called home in the early morning hours on September 16, 2023, at SMP Health-St. Raphael Care Center in Valley City, ND at the age of 85. The funeral service for Evelyn will be 1:30 PM, Saturday, September 23, 2023, at Connect Church of the Nazarene, Valley City. Visitation will begin at noon at the church. The burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery near Valley City. Evelyn Jean Neuharth was born on October 20, 1937, to AJ and Marie (Bender) Neuharth in McClusky, ND. She was the youngest daughter and twelfth of thirteen children; she had 6 sisters and “a half dozen” brothers. She attended school in McClusky, ND, graduating in 1955. She attended Bible College in Saskatchewan for a year before beginning her administrative career in Bismarck, ND. She met Carl Peter in June of 1963 on a blind date, they were married on March 27, 1964. To their union a son, Damon, was born in 1965 and a daughter, Beth, in 1966. The youngest of the family, Karla, came along in 1970. After the kids were in school Evelyn rejoined the work force working nights in admitting at Mercy Hospital, Leevers, and finally settled in at the US Dept. of Agriculture as a program assistant for the ASCS office, which is now the FSA office, retiring in 1999.
As a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Evelyn’s life embodied the Christian values of love and compassion. She was a source of strength and a pillar of faith for her family. She enjoyed cooking, baking, and sewing. Evelyn was active in the Church of the Nazarene serving on the Missions board, being the Lead on the Kitchen Committee, and teaching Sunday School.
She is survived by son Damon and daughter-in-law LeeAnna Peter of Valley City, grandchildren Alyson (Alex) Rupe, Minot, ND, and Dillon (Vee) Peter, Fargo, ND, and great grandchildren Liam and Gemma Rupe. Daughter, Beth and son-in-law Scott Fritz of Jamestown, ND, grandchildren Stacy (Arron) Benson, Lincoln, ND, Nicole (Brandon) Gange, and Molly Fritz, Jamestown, ND, and great grandchildren Kamryn and Blake Benson. Daughter, Karla and son-in-law Doug Olson of Valley City, grandchildren, Emma Olson, and John Olson, both Valley City. Her sister Tee Holcomb, Great Falls, MT, sisters-in-law Shirley Neuharth, Marion (Don) Braunberger, Anna (Bob) Langness, Jann (Glen) Dell, Debby Maust, and brothers-in-law Walt Peter, Al (Bernie) Peter and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Carl (36 days prior), parents, siblings: Helen (Reinhold), Edwin, Clara (Orville), Ted (Mildred), Bob (Irene), Herb, Gladys, Edna, Marion (Bob), Alvin (Eunice), and Bud; niece: Marlene Unruh; in-laws: Leonard Peter and Merilyn Peter.
