vikings-9-11

VALLEY CITY, ND  (NewsDakota.com, photo courtesy of vcsuvikings.com)  Viking volleyball will enter North Star Athletic Association play this week with an 11-3 record and two wins over teams with history in the national poll.

The Vikings finished a 3-1 weekend with a dominating performance over Dakota Wesleyan, sweeping the Tigers 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-18) at Graichen Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.  Dakota Wesleyan was an Elite 8 team a year ago, and was ranked in the top 25 in the preseason national poll.

Valley City State has now beaten two teams that were ranked to start the season.  The Vikings defeated #14 Ottawa, KS 3-1 last week in Bellevue, NE.

Net play spurred the win.  After two-time NAIA All-American Ady Dwight killed seven balls in her first eight swings in a tight first set, the tone changed when Morgan Freije stuffed the next attack from Dwight for a solo block, the first of her three solos and two assists on the day.

Danielle Hagler then took charge, regularly attacking the middle for 11 kills in 14 tries, hitting a monumental .786 in the match.  Bailey Nelson also notched 11 kills, with Freije adding 10.  Sadie Hanson tallied 34 assists, and JayCee Richter led the defense with 17 kills.

The Vikings begin NSAA play at Dickinson State Wednesday.
