Evangeline Inez Badger, 101, died September 2, 2023, in Valley City, ND. She was a resident at the Sheyenne Care Center (SMP Health – St. Raphael) in Valley City.
Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 pm with a 7:00pm prayer service on Friday, September 8, at Oliver-Nathan Funeral Chapel in Valley City. The funeral service, with Pastor Kyle Symanski officiating, will be 10:30 am, Saturday, September 9, 2023, at Faith Lutheran Church in Valley City with visitation one hour prior at the church. The burial will be at Memory Gardens, Valley City.
She was born Evangeline Inez Wisted on March 20, 1922, in a sod house in Dunn County, North Dakota to Iver and Esther (Wendt) Wisted. The oldest of 10 children, she was often put in charge of her younger siblings and took care of the household while her parents farmed. She walked to school and attended classes in a one room schoolhouse until 8th grade. In 1937 the family moved to Pillsbury ND, and she graduated as valedictorian of her class.
Evangeline married Kenneth Eugene Badger in 1941 and they bought a farm by Pillsbury in 1942. There they raised their eight children and two grandchildren that came to live with them in 1971. She belonged to Hope Lutheran Church and taught Sunday school.
Following Kenneth’s death in 1985, she moved to Valley City, ND and was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church and participated in the Ladies Aide, Bible Study Groups, and was a Sunday School teacher for many years. She also was an active quilter with the Good Samaritan Quilters for almost 30 years and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW.
Family was so important to Evangeline, and she was known for her wonderful meals, baking skills, and helping those in need.
She will lovingly be remembered by her children: Edgar “Bud” (Lois) Badger of Casselton; Eileen Sweeten of West Fargo; Harmon (Laurel) of Grand Forks; June (Michael) Howe of Litchville; Kevin (Gail) Badger of Colorado Springs, Co.; and grandson Dennis Oftelie of Valley City. Evangeline had 21 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren.
She will also be remembered by two sisters Selma Tuenge, Monticello MN and Evelyn Delmore, Valley City; one brother Norman (Arlene) Wisted, Hawick MN; and two sister -in-laws Alice Wisted, Fargo and Sharon Wisted, Cedar Rapids, IA.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Karen Oftelie, son Darrell Badger, daughter Nola Glanzer, granddaughter Sherry Oftelie, son-in-law Larry “Pete” Eberle, son-in-law Carl Sweeten, brothers Arland, Kermit, Harmon, Elmo and Ivan “Ike’ Wisted, and sister Norma Sather.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the pastors at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, the care givers at the Legacy Assisted Living Center and Sheyenne Care Center in Valley City, CHS Hospice and especially Dr Misty Anderson.
