The old adage of defense and special teams showed up big for the Hi-Liners on Friday against Watford City as the Valley City defense recorded it’s second shutout of the season while special teams set up a pair of scoring plays to take home a 30-0 win.
One of those plays was a 49yd punt return by Jonah Harstad that set up a one yard touchdown plunge by Carter Borg who would add another score later in the game to bring his TD total to four on the season. The second special teams play was a punt that by Bryson Heck that pinned Watford City on their own goal line and on the very next play an errant snap would force a fumble to make it 16-0 at the time.
However taking home the Ivy Real Estate Group Player of the Game award will be Connor Suhr who recorded a pair of touchdown receptions on the day one of which was a 65-yd catch and run for a first play score that staked Valley City to an early 7-0 lead.
Defensively it was a group effort which saw several players rack up multiple tackle for losses and was led by Will Schwehr who was a constant presence in the Wolves backfield. The Hi-Liners have not outscored their opposition 70-0 on the season as they’ll look to build upon this performance as the season rolls on.
Next game for Valley City will be Friday September 8th at 7:00pm in Devils Lake against the Firebirds.
