Valley City, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)– Valley City’s first home game of the season was one for the books as a back and forward game saw the contest go to a fifth and final set where the Hi-Liners would squeak past with a 15-12 set win to take the game.
For the Hi-Liners it looked like it would be another straight forward win after taking the first set comfortably 25-17 and bouncing back after losing the second set by putting up a dominating 25-11 third set victory. A big reason for the Hi-Liners early success was the play up front by Jovi Borg, Addy Kvilvang, and Kadie Kocka who were able to control the game at the front of the net. Another factor was the serving of both Drew Potratz and Kinlee Sufficool whose poise from deep helped create breathing room for their teammates.
But Wahpeton just like they did in the second would rally in the fourth with a lengthy run to create just enough breathing room that allowed them to hold on to force a fifth and final set.
Both team would be even late in the fifth set at 9-9 before Sufficool would spark another rally with her serving. The penultimate point would be put away by Bailey Leroux to make it 14-11. Leroux’s presence off the bench provided the Hi-Liners with plenty of energy as well as points throughout the game as she took home the Ivy Real Estate Group Player of the Game Award.
After dropping the next point the Hi-Liners would waste no time as they handled the Wahpeton serve to perfection setting up a Kvilvang spike to seal the fifth set 15-12 and take home the match win.
After back to back wins to start up EDC play against Devils Lake and Wahpeton the next game for Valley City will be Tuesday September 5th at home against West Fargo at 7:00pm. That game will be live on KOVC with the pregame show beginning at 6:45pm.
