BISMARCK, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – According to labor statistics released today by Job Service North Dakota, the state’s not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for June was 2.3 percent, marking an increase of 0.4 percentage points from May. However, when compared to June 2022, the current rate is only 0.1 percentage point higher.

Between May 2023 and June 2023, the number of unemployed individuals rose by 1,588, representing a 19.9 percent increase. This rise in unemployment during this period is considered moderate for North Dakota. Moreover, the over-the-year decrease in the unemployed labor force between June 2022 and June 2023 was 348, reflecting a loss of 3.5 percent.

In contrast, the national not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for June was 3.8 percent, higher than the previous month’s rate of 3.4 percent but equal to the rate in June of the prior year.

The nation’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for June was 3.6 percent, a 0.1 percentage point decrease from the previous month and the same as one year ago. In comparison, North Dakota’s seasonally adjusted rate was 2.0 percent, indicating a 0.1 percentage point decline from the prior month and identical to the rate of one year ago. Seasonal adjustment processes allow for meaningful comparisons between different months of the year by accounting for predictable fluctuations due to factors like daylight length and typical weather.

During June, North Dakota ranked 5th among all states with an unemployment rate of 2.0 percent, sharing this position with Maryland. New Hampshire and South Dakota tied for 1st place, boasting unemployment rates of 1.8 percent.
