JAMESTOWN, ND. (NewsDakota.com) – Jamestown’s High School baseball team inched closer to a West Region regular season title on Monday night as the Blue Jays swept Williston at Jack Brown Stadium.
GAME ONE: JAMESTOWN 9, WILLISTON 7
The Blue Jays jumped out to a 5-1 lead after four innings of play in the doubleheader opener thanks to a three-run third inning. The Coyotes took the lead in the fifth, scoring five times off of five hits and two Jamestown errors. The Jays regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth, grabbing four runs off two hits and a Coyote error. Reagan Sortland, Thomas Newman, and Max Fronk all drove in runs for Jamestown to regain the lead in the fifth.
Williston would score once more, in the top of the sixth, capitalizing on a Jamestown error. Five of the seven runs scored by the Coyotes would come from Blue Jay errors.
Mason Lunzman picked up the game one victory, going five innings, striking out seven, and giving up two earned runs. Out of the bullpen, Jackson Walters grabbed the save, striking out four over two innings of relief. Jamestown tallied its nine runs off of 11 hits, leaving eight runners on and committing six errors defensively in game one.
GAME TWO: JAMESTOWN 11, WILLISTON 1 (SIX INNINGS)
A six-run fifth inning combined with a dominant performance on the hill for Payton Hochhalter in game two led the Blue Jays to a sweep of the Coyotes. Hochhalter went five innings, striking out six Williston batters to earn the win. Hochhalter also provided the walk-off home run for Jamestown, a solo shot in the sixth, for the mercy rule victory.
Jamestown scored a run in each of its first four innings at the plate before the sixth run fifth. Tyson Jorissen completed a great day at the plate, picking up five hits, two RBIs, and scoring four runs in the doubleheader. Lunzman swiped bags left and right off of Williston, stealing four bases and scoring three times in game two. Carson Orr went 2-for-3 in game two with an RBI and two runs scored.
The Blue Jays (14-2, 14-2) can secure a share of the West Region regular season title with a doubleheader sweep of St. Mary’s on Thursday in Bismarck.
