The Hi-Liners finally have a tally in the win column this year as they cruised to a 3-0 win over the West Fargo Horace Hawks on Tuesday. The win was due in large part to the performance of Max Mehus on the mound who pitched a complete game shutout.
The Hi-Liners offense struck early in the first inning with a bit of aggressive baserunning as a daring dash by Gavin Gerhardt saw him score from third on a dropped third strike as he beat the throw back home with a headfirst dive to give Valley City a 1-0 lead.
The Hi-Liners would have to wait till the third for a bit more run support as a pair of singles and a sac bunt to begin the inning saw two runners in scoring position to begin the inning. Mehus then hit a sac-fly to right to drive in the first run of the inning before an error by Horace the next at-bat allowed for the second run to come across in the inning.
Mehus working with the early lead was confident and collected sitting down the first seven batters he faced, only allowing a pair of hits on the day. Mehus also recorded a fair amount of punch outs on the day as well tallying six strikeouts, saving his most important one for the final inning sitting down Horace’s Kaisen Nordick with two men on in the seventh inning.
Team defense has been an issue for the Hi-Liners this season. However, Valley City recorded their first errorless game of the season, with sterling defensive efforts by Gerhardt, Carver Pederson, and Mehus who made a couple of stellar plays in the field.
The next scheduled game for Valley City will be on Thursday as the Hi-Liners will be hosting the West Fargo Packers at 5:00pm.
