SIOUX CITY, Iowa (jimmiepride.com)– The Jimmie baseball team was back in action Tuesday morning with a doubleheader against Morningside University. The Mustangs took both games, winning 7-2 and 10-7.
Jamestown (11-11, 0-4 GPAC) will be in Hastings, Neb., for doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday against the Broncos.
Morningside led 3-0 after three innings in game one, then tacked on three more in the fourth and another in the fifth to push their lead to 7-0.
Chase Burke was hit by a pitch leading off the top of the sixth, and Xander Orejudos followed with a two-run home run to put the Jimmies on board. The home run was the only extra-base hit for UJ, who also got singles from Triston Madison and Julian Sansores.
Game two was a back-and-forth affair as both teams put up runs early. Morningside led 2-0 after the first, but Alex Tolbert smashed a two-run homer in the top of the second to make it 2-2.
The Mustangs retook the lead with a pair of runs in the second, and a three-spot in the third extended the lead to 7-2. Jamestown rallied in the top of the fourth, scoring four runs on four hits and a walk. Alex Alva and Xander Orejudos both came through with two-run singles to cut the deficit to one run.
Morningside got one of the runs back in their next at-bat, boosting their advantage to 8-6. After a scoreless fifth, Hayden Brown led off the sixth with a solo home run, once again bringing the Jimmies within a run. The Mustangs plated two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, and UJ went down in order in the seventh to end the game.
Brown, Tolbert, and Trent Peters each scored twice. Orejudos and Brown finished with a pair of hits, and Troy Berg had a single in the fourth that loaded the bases prior to the Orejudos two-run single.
