JAMESTOWN, ND. (NewsDakota.com) – The University of Jamestown men’s and women’s basketball teams extended their respective win streaks to five and seven games with wins over Northwestern on Saturday afternoon.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: (RV) JAMESTOWN 70, #20 NORTHWESTERN 67

The Jimmies jumped out to an early 5-0 lead but Northwestern would go up 7-5 and not trail again until the fourth quarter. Northwestern led Jamestown 43-36 at the break and 57-52 after the third. In the fourth, the Jimmies tied the game at 59 and 63 before a three from Hannah Demars gave Jamestown its first lead since the opening quarter, 66-65 with under four minutes remaining.

Both sides got stands on defense for the next two minutes until a Taylor Vandervelde free throw tied the game at 66. Northwestern took a one-point lead with under 40 seconds remaining, but clutch free throws from Kia Tower pushed Jamestown ahead 68-67 with 24 seconds to go.

The Jimmies got the biggest stop of the game on defense in the final 10 seconds, with Tower securing a missed shot by Molly Schany. Tower hit two more free throws before a missed half-court shot at the horn secured the fifth straight win for the Jimmie women.

DeMars had a double-double, leading Jamestown with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Tower added 14 points and Kate Busek’s production on the glass all afternoon long made the difference for the Jimmies. UJ improves to 17-5 overall, and 12-4 in the GPAC. Jamestown travels to Dakota Wesleyan on Wednesday night.

MEN’S BASKETBALL: #11 JAMESTOWN 78, (RV) NORTHWESTERN 55

The #11 ranked Jimmie men used stout defense and capitalized on Red Raider turnovers in another big home victory. The win, which marks the seventh straight, moves Jamestown into first place in the GPAC.

UJ led 43-23 after the first half, making seven threes in the opening half of play. Northwestern cut down the lead at times in the second half, but never got within fifteen as the Jimmies improved to 18-3 on the year.

Will Cordes led UJ with 19 points while Mason Walters and Cole Woodford each added 13. Walters finished with 13 points and nine rebounds. Marc Kjos helped pace the offense, scoring 12 points, grabbing six rebounds, dishing out five assists, and grabbing four steals. Jamestown finished plus 15 in the turnover category and shot five percent better from the field than Northwestern.

Jamestown, 18-3 overall and 11-3 in the GPAC, hosts #18 Morningside on Monday night at 6:00 PM. Morningside currently trails the Jimmies by a half game in the win column for the top spot in the conference.
